Visitor Information: Frequently Asked Questions

How did Uptown get the name "Uptown" considering that it's south of Downtown?

The short answer is that in the 1920s, a number of business men wanted to re-brand the Uptown area as an upscale commercial district like that of the Uptown area of Chicago. In 1929, the Lagoon Theater changed its name to the Uptown Theater. From that time on, there were a fair amount of businesses in the area that had “Uptown” in its name, despite that many people continued to refer to the area as “Hennepin-Lake”. It wasn’t until Calhoun Square was built in the early 1980s when Hennepin-Lake was almost fully replaced by Uptown. Until then, the City of Minneapolis always called it “Hennepin-Lake” in studies, plans, and other documents.

Ultimately it was a marketing ploy.

What are the boundaries of Uptown?

There are no official boundaries to what constitutes Uptown. The City of Minneapolis generally considers the City neighborhoods of CARAG, ECCO, LHENA, and EIRA as representitive of Uptown. Generally, residents who've lived in Minneapolis for a longer length of time consider Uptown as the east side of Lake Calhoun to about Colfax Avenue, north of 36th Street and north to about Franklin along Hennepin as the Uptown area. Newer residents or visitors tend to consider the Lyndale Avenue corridor from Franklin to 36th Street and the west side of Lake Calhoun as the Uptown area. OurUptown.com considers the broader area as Uptown and defines sub areas to further clarify the location.

Are there hotels in or near Uptown?

There are no hotels in Uptown right now, though several have been proposed recently. There are several options depending on what you're looking for. The Sheraton Midtown is east of Uptown by about two miles. Downtown Minneapolis has numerous choices. The I-394 corridor is about a 15-minute drive west of Uptown. The I-494 strip is about 20 minutes south of Uptown.
