communities like Uptown, where dense mixed-use communities try to balance
corporate and independent businesses.

Some Terms

Synopsis: Concerns over development height in and around Uptown
have made their way into politics and created a lot of confusion. Many
believe the city’s zoning code states there is a four story height limit
in the core of Uptown. That belief is incorrect. The zoning code mandates
a four-story or 56 foot limit to what one can build without significant
review.

Uptown Plan Should Focus on Goals

Synopsis: Uptown has made headlines in the last couple of months over
proposed buildings in the area. Some say Uptown needs a plan for its
future before approving projects that are significantly different than
what current zoning allows. The current process, while not perfect, does
allow for intelligent discussion and review on a particular project.
Uptown does need a plan, however, so that new development can work within
a framework that focuses on goals and rewards sound design while
protecting neighbors.
