Project Description
A new, two-floor building is proposed for the Uptown Bar & Cafe property, adjacent the under construction Columbia Sportswear store and the Suburban World Theater. The project, according to a staff report from the City will consist of a new two-level building that is 40' tall and contains over 9,600 square feet of retail space.
The second floor would be stepped back away from Hennepin to allow for a green-roof and a skylight system. Two patios would be on the second floor, as well as part of the retail building.
According to a Southwest Journal source, the Uptown Bar & Cafe hopes to relocate within the area. The Star Tribune reported on August 25 that the developer, Urban Anthology, is assisting in the relocation efforts and that one of the locations they are looking at is "very close" to the current Uptown Bar. The decision to redevelop the property, according to the article, is part of a divestment strategy for the 88-year old owner as he prepares his estate.
The project needed a variance to reduce the off-street parking requirement from 7 to 0 stalls and a variance to allow an increase in the maximum allowable floor area of retail sales and services from 8,000 square feet to 9,960 square feet.
